Sunday November 19th Bulletin

The Transition Team has several goals in the process of preparing our Church Profile. While the survey completion is critical, we also are striving for as much transparency as we can achieve. With that in mind, we will be putting blurbs into the bulletin each week with updated information. A lot of this will be generated by questions that we get from the congregation, so thank you for your interest and involvement. Look for a “Transition Team” page on the church web site where each week’s message will be archived. Refer back to it for information that you may have missed.

Who is God Calling us to Become? Only we can figure this out, and it starts with YOU! Taking the survey is the first step of our Church Profile Process. So far, we have 72 surveys completed, so we are off to a good start. Please aim to get your survey completed as soon as possible. As always, we welcome any and all questions. If you ask a question, it will likely be one that several people have, and we will address it!

If you have not had the opportunity to attend church for the last few weeks, please see the Transition Team page on the church website. (Click on the “connect bar” then choose Transition Team from the drop-down menu to read all past Bulletin blurbs and the letter sent out on October 28.)
After the Survey results have been professionally analyzed and presented to the Transition Team, we will start offering small group meetings to offer more opportunities for feedback. Members of the team and interested volunteers will also meet with groups in the Community to both get a sense of how our church is viewed by them, and how we can become more helpful and involved in the Community. After all of this is compiled, we will complete our Church Profile which will become the framework through which the Search Team starts the work of selecting the best Candidate.

We welcome your questions and will have members of the Transition Team available at coffee hour to help with any questions you may have.

Our choice of our next minister will be influenced by our Church Profile, which will be prepared using the answers to the survey and the input from the Congregation. The survey is one of the tools through which YOUR VOICE will be heard. Every individual should complete the survey, and please note that it will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The way the survey is set up, each question must be answered, and it must be completed in one session. We thank you for your input and opinions!

Survey Questions

Who is Holy Cow and why are we doing this survey?

As you know, the Transition Team has asked you to complete a survey developed by Holy Cow Consulting. This assessment will help to answer the questions, “Who we are” and “Who is God calling us to be” as a congregation.

The survey that we are using is the Congregation Assessment Tool or CAT. It has been used by Holy Cow in over 3000 congregations nationwide. Upon the completion of the survey by the congregation, Holy Cow Consulting will send a representative to meet with our Transition Team to discuss and analyze the data. This data analysis and summary will provide fundamental information to aid the team in writing our church profile.

Your individual input is ESSENTIAL to the minister search process. If you haven’t shared your thoughts yet, please try to complete the survey by Thanksgiving. Results must be in by November 30 to be tabulated in the analysis.

If you have further questions please talk with a Transition Team Member or send us an e-mail at transitionteam@needhamucc.org

What questions has the Transition Team been getting? “Can you explain the difference between the Church Profile and the Survey?”

The Survey that we have chosen to use will be an important tool in developing an in depth statistical description of our church congregation and those involved within our church community. The five open ended questions at the end of the survey will provide more anecdotal responses which we will carefully compile to get a “snapshot” of who we want to be as a church.

Sunday November 5th Bulletin

The first questions that we are addressing relates to the open-ended survey question on the various models of Church Ministry. Most churches with more than one minister hire a “Senior Minister” who is charged with the responsibilities of leadership. This has been the model we have followed. But some churches use other models including:
• Team Ministry-two or more ministers, each with an area of specialization, share the responsibilities of leadership.
• Job Sharing or Co-Pastoring-two people who share the “Senior Minister” job.
• Job Sharing Couples-two people who share the “Senior Minister” job who are married.
• Part-Time Ministers
• Bi-Vocational- A minister who works part time for the church and pursues another vocation.

For those of you wondering “Who is our Neighbor?” there is no single answer. Is it the people in our immediate vicinity using a literal translation of the word, or should we use a more biblical interpretation of local, global and international? The answer is both. Within the various missions of our church, we strive to connect with and make a difference to many groups of people. With that in mind, the questions on the survey that refer to our neighbor could have various connotations. Your answers will reflect who you would like for our church to connect with.

Our choice of our next minister will be influenced by our Church Profile, which will be prepared using the answers to the survey and the input from the Congregation. The survey is one of the tools through which YOUR VOICE will be heard. Each member should complete the survey, and please note that it will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The way the survey is set up, each question must be answered, and it must be completed in one session. We thank you for your input and opinions!

October 28 Letter to the Congregation:

This letter is to help explain the role of the Transition Team in the pastoral search process. The Board has appointed the following members to the Transition Team:
Barbra Morton
Claudia Darmofal
Carl Madsen
Deborah Abraham
Diana Conroy
Heather Salerno
Frank Luppino and
Alan Clayton-Matthews.

Reverend Jim Mitulski, as Interim Minister is also a member of this team.

The Transition Team is responsible for developing our Church Profile, which will be provided to prospective candidates for the position of Senior Minister. The Board will nominate a list of Search Committee members who will be voted on by the congregation. This committee will be studying the resumes of potential candidates for the position. While it is possible that some members of the Transition Team could move to the Search Committee, there will not be an exact duplication. This first phase of the Search Process is about us, the Congregation. The second part will be about the Pastoral Candidate.

We began this process by meeting with Reverend Wendy Vander Hart, Associate Conference Minister who is guiding us along this journey. We are not inventing this. Based on a well thought out UCC template, the Team will involve the Congregation through various methods to answer the questions “Who are we Now?”, “Who is our Neighbor?”, and “Who is God Calling us to be?” Through the work of answering those questions, we will come up with our unique church profile.

The Transition Team will be guiding the Congregation through this work. YOU are the ones who will provide the information and feedback for the Profile. We will be sending out a survey by November 1 and are striving for 100% participation. We will be having meetings both Congregation wide and small group to have more intimate discussions. The Team is currently trying to devise as many meeting venues as possible to increase attendance, and to decrease inconvenience as much as possible.

We ask that you Pray, Think, Participate and Respond!

Our timeline is ambitious. We are expecting to complete this process by the end of January. With hard work, and thoughtful assistance by members of the Congregation, we believe that this can be accomplished. When you receive the survey, we ask that you return it to us by Thanksgiving. That will be key in keeping to our timeline.

We are in the process of setting up a designated Transition Team email for your thoughts and questions about the process. Remember- we ALL have questions and concerns about who our future senior minister will be. This is not the part of the journey that will answer that question, it is the part that tells us about Who We Are and Who God is calling us to be.
Prayerfully Yours,
The Transition Team
