REGISTRATION
Welcome! We are glad you have decided to attend our Sunday school program. We are beginning the new school year 2009-2010. If you have not done so, please register your child/ren by filling out an orange registration sheet and hand the sheet back to one of our friendly Christian Education Committee Members.
MORNING WORSHIP, SUNDAYS 10:00 AM
Children are received warmly in the worship service. Grades 1–6 attend with their families and leave for their classes at the conclusion of the “Time for Children.” During the “Time For Children”, a children's moment is offered that speaks directly to their experience and helps them feel included. Infants through Kindergartners go directly to their classrooms at 10:00 a.m. Kindergartners attend the first part of worship as a class at the discretion of their teachers.
Age as of September 1st determines which grade a student will attend, in order to coincide with school placements. Please contact the Rev. Werder if you feel your child has been placed inappropriately.
Children who are two on or before September 1st will be placed in the Crib/Toddler room. Children who are three on or before September 1st will be placed in the “Rainbow” class. Pre-kindergarten class is for all students who are four on or before September 1st and five year olds who are not attending Kindergarten.
PARENTS PICK-UP
Children of 1st grade age and under have to be picked up by their parents after the worship service (but not earlier than 11:15 a.m.). Children grade 2 and up are welcomed to meet their parents after church in Fellowship Hall or at a designated place in the church.
CHURCH SCHOOL CLASSES
“Rainbow” through Kindergartners: Teachers are present in the classrooms from 9:45 a.m. each Sunday morning to greet the children. Classes start at 10:00 and continue until worship is over. Parents pick up their children at the classrooms at the conclusion of the service.
Grades 1–6: Classes begin when children gather at the conclusion of the Time for Children. Children are dismissed at the end of the worship service but no earlier than 11:15 a.m. Children plan to meet their parents at Coffee Hour.
Grade 7 – 8: Students are led in a special program taught by John and Susan Kirk in Stevenson Hall. All students in that age range go directly to class by 10 a.m.
CURRICULUM
We are using the curriculum called "Gather Round: “Gather Round: Hearing and Sharing the Good News” – a Bible-based curriculum nurturing children, youth, and adults in becoming followers of Jesus: people who know and love God, interpret God’s word, belong to God’s gathered community, and share God’s good news.
This curriculum has been created and published by the Church of the Brethren (Mennonite Church) which has a long tradition of being dedicated to peace, service, and Christian discipleship. And most important of all: this curriculum has been endorsed by the United Church of Christ. If you are interested in taking a look at the curriculum, please go to www.gatherround.org. We have sample lessons in the office, if you would like a hands-on look at the new curriculum.
NEW SCHEDULE AND ORAGNIZATION
The Christian Education Committee has made three changes to the program:
1. Each class is led by a consistent teaching team for the the whole year.
2. An age-appropriate Bible story curriculum will be implemented for the Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten children.
3. Sunday school classes will attend a chapel service on the first Sunday of most months druing the Sunday school year, and then join their families for Communion in the sanctuary.
CRIB-TODDLER PROGRAM
Volunteers provide quality care for infants and toddlers each Sunday during the worship service. The crib/toddler room is staffed from 9:45am with two to three volunteers who provide care on a rotational basis throughout the year.
Our Nursery “premise pager system” assures that you will be contacted immediately should your child require your attention. A pager is issued to the parent when a child is brought to the Crib-Toddler Room. In the event of a distressed child, we can call a parent immediately by entering the pager number issued to the parent. The pager is instantly activated with a silent vibration. Parents are requested to return to the Crib-Toddler Room as soon as possible.
