Church History Timeline

August 1856 People meet in Village Hall as a church and the Friendly Society was established to raise money to rent Village Hall.
August 2, 1857 The Church and Society were organized.
May 6, 1857 The Evangelical Congregational Church of Needham was formed.
July 27, 1857 The Evangelical Congregational Society was formed.
December 29, 1859 The Friendly Society decided it was better to build a place to worship than continue to pay rent for the Village Hall. The chapel was built and dedicated on Chapel Street at a cost of $1,500.
1874 Fermented wine at communion was discontinued.
1886 The church purchased a lot on Linden and Great Plain for $1,500 by Judge Grover and Dr. Kingsbury (the church paid the interest). A church and chapel were built.
1921 The addition to the Church on Linden Street was completed.
1923 The church was almost completely destroyed by fire and was repaired at a cost of $15,841. A 2,000 pound bell was acquired for an additional cost of $500.
July 5, 1924 The church was once again destroyed by fire except for the newer section. The new building cost $60,000 plus an additional $5,600 for the organ.
October 17, 1954 The cornerstone was laid for the new Church. The 1886 and 1924 cornerstones were opened and replaced.
